Hired! Changing Lanes from the Auto Industry
Hired Changing Lanes from the Auto IndustryHired Changing Lanes from the Auto IndustryChanging lanes for auto manufacturing managerI am watching the fourth day of the Third Cricket Test of Australia against South Africa, said Sheri Olinyk on the night of Jan. 5 from her home in London, Ontario. We have a special cable channel called Cricket Plus with all-day cricket. I turn it on when I cam home from work, and so I watch it for a couple of hours in the evening. The remark is surprising, not just because few Canadians are cricket fans, but few cricket fans anywhere are women. But being alone among women in a male-dominated group is nothing new for Olinyk. She is a plant manager for Saint-Gobains construction-materials plant in Plattsville, Ontario, a position few women aspire to and a workplace few women enter. Olinyk spent the previous 12 years in manufacturing positions at several automotive companies, a similarly female-averse industry. Its been like this since she was a young girl. It takes a certain type of person to deal with that kind of environment, she said of working in a world of brawny, tough guys. Maybe its because I grew up as a tomboy. And when I went to engineering school, I was the one girl in a class of 600. It is an environment that I have known my entire life, so when I go to work and there is me and 40 guys, and everybody that reports to me is male, and there might be one administrative assistant on the other side of the amtsstube that I am sharing a bathroom with this is just what I have become used to.What she isnt used to is being at the top of the operation. Olinyk made the jump from automotive manufacturing to construction materials in October to attain the top position in a plant - and escape an industry that seems to be on the decline. The industry switch got Olinyk the plant-manager job she always wanted and a new opportunity to network with women in her position and mentor young women entering the manufacturing field in growing number s.The off ramp from automotiveOlinyk, who is a Six Sigma Master Black Belt (business-management certification) spent most of her time trouble shooting problems within manufacturing and business processes at auto plants. After 12 years, however, the top post of plant manager had yet to materialize.I love automotive. I love the pace and being on the bleeding edge, she said. I had spent a lot of time in senior positions with different functions within the automotive industry. And I had spent so much time over the latter half of my career being the voice behind the throne that I just decided it was time to put my money where my mouth was and take on the role myself while trying to make the cultural transition to a Six Sigma environment. And Saint Gobain offered that.Olinyk began looking at jobs in early summer 2008 but did not make a concerted effort to move until August. She used OpsLadder to post her resume and was put in touch with different recruiters, one of whom introduced her to Saint-Gobain. She accepted the job in October, just as the Big Three automakers - Chrysler, Ford and General Motors - made their case to Congress for a federal bailout to avoid bankruptcy.Although the construction industry in the U.S. faces diminishing demand for materials and a crisis just short of the one facing the automakers, Olinyk is cautiously optimistic. International exports and the weak Canadian dollar are all plus factors for Saint-Gobain, she said.I think that the Canadian economy is somewhat more robust than what is going on in the States right now, she said. We dont quite see the recessionary fluctuations as you see on the U.S. side in most cases, although we do lag behind because the economies are so tied. Any industry in Canada does market a fair amount of their product in the States. Fortunately for the business that I am in, it is actually a global consumer base, so I am exporting to Europe and to China and to South America, she said. So that does cushion the blo w somewhat. The other thing that we see is the positive assistance that we get from monetary exchange, so when the Canadian dollar is a little bit down (as it traditionally has been over the last 25 years), it does give us a little more leverage and give us a competitive advantage. The plant, which is within driving distance of her London, Ontario home, was also a major factor for Olinyk, who has two grown daughters and elderly parents nearby. So everything, she recalled, came together very nicely.Transferrable skillsSaint-Gobain SA is a French multinational that was founded in 1665 to produce the glass for the nachhall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles. Today, it is one of the worlds top 100 industrial corporations, producing an array of construction and high-performance materials. It is a huge company, and they are into so many different things, she said. It doesnt have a name like GE, but they have just about as many employees. They have places all over (the world). They do sp ecial building materials and concrete and glass, and we (at the Plattsville plant) are in the abrasives business. Every time I open one of the newsletters, I see all kinds of weird and wonderful things I didnt know about. At Saint-Gobain Canada, Olinyk has full PL responsibility for a facility that manufactures and converts sandpaper, where she said she applies the same Six Sigma process and leadership aptitude she honed at auto plants. It doesnt matter whether you are making widgets or trinkets or atomic bombs or jet liners, she said. It really doesnt matter what the outcome product is. You really have to focus on leadership, and managing people and processes. And if you can do that, you can go into any industry and be successful.I dont think industry really matters that much, she said. If you are going to want to take a leadership role, you have to take a leadership role no matter what it is that you are doing. Its a mans world? Not many women consider operations management in either auto- or construction materials-manufacturing plants. For those who do, Olinyk hopes her years of experience can make this career path more accessible. It is not an easy life, Olinyk admitted. It can get very tough. Theres a lot of stress. You give up a lot as far as your personal life, your family life. It can very nasty. It can get very verbal, and you have just got to be able to take it.It turns out, the experience is not as unique as Olinyk had assumed. She recently attended a womens-only conference at Smith College, North Hampton, Mass., where she discovered what good company she is in.It was really unique experience for me because I was meeting a lot of other women from engineering backgrounds who have done wonderful things in their careers, she said. I truly found out that although I may be unique in my neighborhood, there are more people out there like me than I ever assumed. The idea of networking with other women in engineering and construction is a fairly new phenomenon to Olinyk, but she said she feels an added sense of responsibility to assist younger women now finding success in her specialty. It really wasnt available when I was starting out, she said. And now it is nice to know that they are out there. I guess I have learned to stand on my own two feet. But I am aware of younger ladies who are coming up the ranks now. I tend to want to spend a little bit more time with them, and take on a mentor role with them.

Music News Press Release Template
Music News Press Release Template Music News Press Release Template When you get some good news about your band or an artist on your music label, dont keep it to yourself. Maybe a singer has been asked to do a special radio session or a songwriter has just picked up an award. Whatever it is, make sure you share that information with the news media. Every time something new happens with your band or label, it gives the press one more reason to put your name in print. Following a news release template is a good way to spread the word. Before getting started, consider a few basics. Be succinct with news releases about appearances, honors bestowed, or something similar. Put the key information up front to grab the readers attention and go easy on the background material. Likewise, dont overthink the best time to send your press release. With breaking news, you want to get the information to the press as it happens. The Header The header is your headline- a summary of your news in just a few words, such as (Band Name) to appear on (Radio Show). This header should be larger than the rest of the text on the page and can be further set apart by using bold print. Beneath your headline, you also can include a subhead including a few more crucial details about the news. For instance, Appearance scheduled for 4 p.m. on January 25 in the (Radio Station Call Letters) studio. Make the subhead smaller than your headline but larger than the rest of the text on your page. Italicizing the subhead will further set it apart. Lead Paragraph State the news clearly and succinctly, and get straight to the point. For example, if the news release is to announce an award, open the lead paragraph with something like, John Q. Singer has been named the recipient of the (Name of Award). If it is an annual award, include the applicable year in the lead sentence. Follow up the lead sentence with details about who is presenting the award, and when and where the presentation will take place. If the event is open to the public, include a sentence about when and where tickets will go on sale and for how much. Adjust the wording appropriately depending on the nature of the news being announced, but the important thing is to stick to the basic facts with the lead paragraph and avoid extraneous detail. Middle Paragraph(s) If applicable and available, include a brief quote from the subject of the news in the second paragraph. This is optional, and releases being sent out on short notice are less likely to include them because there might not be time to get a statement from anyone. Following that, include a quick overview of relevant background information. If the news is about an award or an event, provide some details about it in addition to some specifics about the artist(s) being featured or honored. Anticipate the sorts of questions reporters might ask when they call to follow up on the information in the news release. The more complete the news release, the less time you have to spend on the phone answering questions about mundane details. Closing Paragraph and Attachments Use the closing to include the contact information of the person who will be fielding requests for more information about the news. You also might have promotional photos of the artist who is the subject of the news release, and the closing should make it clear that the photos are included with the news release. Also, note any other documents that need to be sent along with the release. Letterhead, Email, and Social Media The actual news release should fit easily on one page, and it is best to use letterhead. Include the band or label logo at the top of the letterhead, if applicable, along with contact information including phone numbers, fax numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, and websites. Attach the news release and any applicable documents to an email addressed to the news organizations receiving the release. In the body of the email, include information from the first paragraph of the news release with a note stating that more detailed information is included in an attached news release. Use band or label websites or social media accounts to post a PDF of the release and the included information. Dont rely only on music journalists to spread the news; get the information to your online followers.

Essential Tips for Moms Returning to Work
Essential Tips for Moms Returning to Work Essential Tips for Moms Returning to Work Essential Tips for Moms Returning to Work For mothers looking to re-enter the working world, here's how to bypass some common roadblocks you may encounter. [TWEET] After years of soccer practice and playdates, you might find that it's time to leave that world behind and return to work. The U.S. Census Bureau reports more than five million women choose to take a hiatus from work to raise their children. But more than 75 percent of those women decide to return to their careers within a year of their children celebrating their tenth birthday. There are many roadblocks for mothers returning to work competition from recent graduates, fear they may take another hiatus, lack of recent experience and continuing education. What most women don't realize is these are all preventable, with a little ingenuity and practice. Translate activities into experience Just because you spent the last five years working on committees at your child's school and you technically have an employment gap doesn't mean you don't have experience. You just need to convince employers that you have the skills and experience, just not from the typical career path. Pull up a copy of your old resume and compare it to the work you did for school organizations or community volunteer groups. Does anything pop or seem familiar? Those are the experiences and achievements employers are looking for. For example, let's say you are applying for a marketing job. Last year's fundraiser for the school dance comes in handy. List the description and achievements as follows: ST. JOHN's CATHOLIC SCHOOL, Atlanta, GA August 2013 to August 2015 Fundraiser Specialist Spearheaded campaign to raise funds for school's dance and special activities. Designed flyers, brochures and donation cards using Adobe InDesign. Coached team members with little to no marketing background how to proactively seek funds and build connections. Increased community engagement by proactively networking with business leaders, spiritual mentors and dedicated parents. Raised $30,000 first year managing marketing campaign, and brought in more than 100 volunteers and student workers. Increased fundraising revenue by 15 percent during following year's campaign. Acquired $150,000 yearly commitment from Staples, supplying all office supplies for charity events and organizations. The most common experience found during your employment gap is school work. But many mothers volunteer with community organizations and causes to supplement their time. Be careful when listing these activities. Make sure to clarify this was volunteer work and not a paid position. Freelance projects count towards experience Some mothers choose to freelance in their spare time. Those projects may include design, typing, receptionist work, transcribing, etc. These are considered paid work experience and should be listed under job history on your resume, thereby helping to eliminate an employment gap. But don't list every single job separately. This can come across as job hopping or lack of dedication. Instead list yourself as the company and go from there. The following position shows how to write a freelance transcriptionist job, one of the most common work-at-home jobs. MEGAN SMITH, Atlanta, GA August 2013 to August 2015 Medical Transcriptionist Entrusted to transcribe medical records for local physicians, nurse practitioners and dental professionals. Optimized records making them easy to organize, retrieve and file. Monitored entries for errors, and promptly corrected each file once inconsistencies were found. Ensured HIPPA and other federal, state, local and industry standards and requirements adherence. Compiled more than 2,500 records using various data entry, medical record and shorthand systems and software. Reduced in-accuracy by 15 percent for one physician and 50 percent for another, earning awards and increased compensation for both practices. Notable clients include Dr. Jay Griffin, Delta Dental of Atlanta and Atlanta Dental College. Should I create a job title? Experts disagree on whether mothers should create a job title or not. On one side of the fence, resume consultants say a large employment gap will automatically disqualify you for an interview. Others claim choosing a title sounds corny, and the hiring manager may not take you seriously. Both are true. While it is never advisable to advertise large gaps in work history, there is no need to start fabricating a job description and title. Yes, mothers work very hard to take care of the children and family. They spend free time working for the school and nonprofits. But these are addressed using different methods. Using the methods prescribed for freelance work and volunteerism listed above will eliminate the need to cover up large gaps in work history. Otherwise, if you don't have any volunteer or freelance experience, it may be time to start looking at your duties at home. This should not be listed in the career section. Explain this in the cover letter. Searching for a job and returning to work is never easy, but that task becomes much more difficult for mothers who left the workforce several years ago. Looking at your skills, extracurricular experience and professional training can help make the search and transition simpler. Just remember three simple rules, and the rest is gravy: Be patient; don't give up. Be honest, and mention your situation early in the cover letter. Focus on what you can do, not what you've missed. Let TopResume help you write the next chapter of your career. Here's how.

3 Job Search Moves The Age 50+ Crowd Didnt Think Of
3 Job Search Moves The Age 50+ Crowd Didnt Think Of 3 Job Search Moves The Age 50+ Crowd Didnt Think Of INBOX: âJewel, I used to be able to just network with a few people I knew, make some calls, pass my resume around, and land a good job. But now I have to actively market myself, which is a first for me.â Yes, the times, the have aâchanged. In that magical era gone by (called âthe â90sâ) you would go on an interview and have a message on your answering machine from the employer by the time you got back home. I used to be a journalist, so I feel compelled to bring you the following news flash: if all youâre doing is recycling the job search methods you used before, you are going to be banging your head against the wall for quite a long time, this time around. On top of that, in those olden days when you were 30, you didnât have a ton of experience and you didnât need to make as much money. But by today, youâve likely built up a lot of experience and can fit into many different roles, and youâre a much more expensive hire. Thatâs a combination that can cause plenty of employers to tell you in some form of coded language that, âyouâre overqualified.â So, letâs talk about 3 job search strategies you need to take to make your job search less daunting: Donât Just Job Search. Company Search. Make a list of companies that are least likely to disqualify you because of your age. These companies are ones that target older customers, for example, those in the health care or financial services sectors. They are much more likely to be receptive to you. Hereâs why this is hard: you get more done when you fly through the job boards hitting the âapplyâ and âsubmitâ buttons for every role that even remotely smells like something you can do. Really, though? Do you really get more done that way? I know you conduct a lot of activity that way. But activity and productivity are 2 entirely different things. When youâre just job searching, things come to an end once you donât get a response, the recruiter asks you if youâd be âcomfortableâ in this type of environment (translation: a workplace filled with millennials), or the hiring manager tells you, âweâve decided to go in a different direction.â But when elevate to a company search, you can pursue multiple opportunities with multiple decision makers in an organization that you like and believe in. If a window closes for you regarding one specific role, another door can still open for you with that same employer. Stop Casting A Wide Net. In Fact, Cast That Net Off Altogether. Telltale signs youâre doing entirely too much, while getting entirely nowhere: applying for 300 jobs in 3 months. You canât do 300 jobs. Period.com. And no, the employer is not going to figure out where you might fit in. Position yourself as the solution, not the problem. Research to find out what the company is doing right now. That doesnât come from the âabout usâ or âcompany historyâ pages. (By the way, you do realize that âhistoryâ is the opposite of âright now.â) Get social. Iâm not saying just open an account and then sit there. Actually use LinkedIn and Twitter to follow the companies you put on your list (see how this ties into my 1st suggestion above), and then weave in what theyâre working on with what youâre saying in your resume and cover letter. Hereâs why this is hard: it requires that you customize your resume and cover letter every time. Yes, it does. But instead of the prospect of that weighing on your mind, let me show you how quick it can be. Regarding your resume, the only parts that should change are your profile / summary and your expertise. You can tweak (not overhaul) these components simply to reflect the language that particular company is using. Most of your experience section can remain the same. When you position yourself as the solution to the problem, you are leveraging your expertise to demonstrate that you understand the issues the company faces. Thatâs a far cry from millennials who are significantly less likely to have built the knowledge and experience to come in and solve complex issues. Own Your Age Like The Valuable Asset It Is. There is so much talk in this process surrounding hiding or covering up your age. On a very basic level, leaving off the year of your college graduation is a way to do that. Thatâs fine on paper when youâre not face-to-face with someone. However, once youâre in front of the recruiter or decision maker, donât seek to hide the facts or otherwise run from them. In short, donât go in thinking you have to defend your age. You donât. Talk about specific examples of when you applied your particular brand of expertise to achieve something for your prior employer â" this doesnât have anything to do with age. Rather, the focus here is on your knowledge. Hereâs why this is hard: literally, every day of the week, when I ask a candidate what they can come in and do for their next employer that will make a difference, the person says some version of the following, âI can put the team together, I can make sure we have all our ducks in a row, and I can get the job done.â The above means youâve told me 101% of nothing. #sorrynotsorry. I breathe, smile (through the phone), and say, âAnd when youâre talking about âthe job,â tell me what result you have delivered time and again.â At that point I usually start to hear the beginning of a substantive answer, regarding increasing sales performance in 3 months, realigning the marketing message to deepen audience penetration, or coaching the team to increase productivity over this time last year. These are the specific points to emphasize when conversing with the recruiter or decision maker. Trying to weed through the job search process doesnât have to be an overwhelming thing. And being age 50+ is not an automatic killer, by any stretch of the imagination. Thereâs a free online program coming up, â5 Game-Changing Job Search Hacks For The Age 50+ Job Hunterâ in which we talk about the recruiterâs search process and the key factors he has in mind when identifying candidates. Register today and hear the success stories of the age 50+ candidates who got placed in relatively short time frames. Then youâll know how you can do the exact same thing for yourself.

Dads rant about lack of baby-changing stations is everything
Dad's rant about lack of baby-changing stations is everything Dad's rant about lack of baby-changing stations is everything Chris Mau went viral when he posted a Facebook status about having to change his daughter on dirty bathroom floors on Facebook due to a lack of baby-changing stations in menâs rooms. His post has received more than 63,000 likes and nearly 145,000 shares thus far because it resonates with so many dads and sits well with so many moms.âIâm getting pretty sick of having to change my daughter on a disgusting floor because the only changing table in the place is located in the womenâs bathroom,â he wrote. âItâs crazy to imagine I know but there are guys who take care of their kids too.âMau, who is a 33-year-old father of one son and three daughters, wrote that the situation âleft very little options for privacy,â since heâd taken his daughter for a walk when she needed to be changed. He always carries waters, formula, diapers, wipes, baby powder and an emergency towel in the stroller and, though he had no car in which to change her diaper, he saw a restaurant nearby w here heâd assumed he could do just that. But when he got inside the bathroom, he realized that it lacked counter space beyond a three-inch gap between the two sinks.(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = 'https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1version=v3.1'; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));âI was immediately frustrated with the ignorance of the facility and with [my daughter] crying I had to make the hard choice between either making her wait until we found a facility that had a changing station, or ease her discomfort and change her in the bathroom anyway,â he said in a post on Love What Matters. âThe condition of the bathroom was less than sanitary, but the crying of my children eats at the very fiber of my being and I had to help her. So I grabbed the towel, laid it out and changed her in the stall, all whi le my mind raced at how unnecessary and preventable this entire situation is.âFacebook users commented words of affirmation.âUgh! I agree,â one woman wrote. âI had to stop at a gas station to change my daughter and even I had to change her on the floor! Cause no changing table⦠They need to be everywhere!âNot only do they need to be in all bathrooms, but they also need to be cleaner. The UKâs Real Radio found that 92 out of 100 changing stations had cocaine residue on them, and theyâre also often used as dirty diaper bins, garbage tables, and worse (read: a place to toss used condoms), according to BabyGaga. The point is that all restrooms, regardless of gender, should be offering clean, dedicated spaces for changing their babiesâ diapers.AnnaMarie Houlis is a multimedia journalist and an adventure aficionado with a keen cultural curiosity and an affinity for solo travel. 4 ways helping a friend with their resume can benefit your resume
4 ways helping a friend with their resume can benefit your resume 4 ways helping a friend with their resume can benefit your resume If your pal or co-worker is looking for some help revising or updating their resume, the benefits could be more than just helping them polish their resume. By getting your creative juices flowing, your proofreading skills sharpened and getting your head back in a job-circuit mentality, you may become inspired to re-craft or update your own resume. Here, experts share why itâs not only nice to help a friend but why it may help boost your own resume success. You remember your own accoladesWhen helping a friend build and improve their resume, you may be inspired to improve your own resume.âIt always inspires me to improve my own resume because it makes me think of experiences I had not highlighted in the past, and it helps me remember programming or events I had not considered putting in my resume but are absolutely beneficial,â says Jen Fry, a resume expert. You can reframe your own experiencesIf youâve worked in a particular sector for a long time, your resume may have tunnel vis ion.âBy reviewing a friendâs resume, particularly a friend who works in a different field, you can see how other people prioritize and talk about their skills,â says career coach Meg Duffy.Your resume can get a structure re-bootHelping friends in their job search is always a great way to develop your job-seeking skills since you can get their perspective and see how they go about it, while also engaging in discussions when you provide them with advice, says Valerie Streif, with Pramp, a mock interview platform for job seeking developers, software engineers, data scientists, and product managers . When you see how someone else formats and structures their resume, you can get an idea of how to improve your own.âIt can open your eyes to different keywords you could be using, formatting styles, or make you realize you have a lot of extra content on your resume that doesnât need to be there,â says Streif.Your benefits can go beyond a resumeThrough brainstorming resumes with a friend, it can spawn peer-to-peer interview practice which is also an excellent way to boost skills, says Streif.âBecause working with another person is going to give you a chance to see their strengths and weaknesses, and their feedback on your performance gives you an idea what you need to work on before your real interview interaction,â Streif continues. âSometimes, we donât realize the little body language signals we give off to the interviewer, so having a chance to âcheck thisâ is valuable.âI hope this is helpful, please let me know if you have any further questions.

Can You Match Your Resume to a Job Description
Can You Match Your Resume to a Job Description Can You Match Your Resume to a Job Description Use the right keywords to tap the âhidden accomplishmentsâ in every job description.Resume experts tell us that it is important to capture the attention of hiring managers through certain keywords that express âdynamicâ concepts. This is often referred to as putting âaction verbsâ in your resume. These may be words such as âtransformâ, âforgeâ, âdiagnoseâ and âcompleteâ. In semantics, such ideas are related to events that have end points and as such are viewed as accomplishments. It is very likely that the concepts behind this class of words convey that you have accomplished things and are a âdoerâ.What this does not tell you, however, is whether similar sorts of concepts live inside job descriptions. Job descriptions do not usually ask for accomplishments per se, but there are usually words within them that give clues as to what the hiring manager wants for a particular position. If you ask recruiters, they will have a very hard time articulating what the âaction verbsâ are in their jobs descriptions - but you can bet that they are there and that those groups of keywords are very important to matching job seekers with the right jobs.Ladders did research and compiled a comprehensive list of 1,125,000 words from job description texts to test this. We used position profiles from different functions such as sales, marketing, finance and technology and analyzed the sorts of verbs contained in them. Extracting only transitive verbs (verbs that have objects to receive an action and complete the meaning) we derived a list of those that were most common - occurring at least 100 times each. Below is a small sample:marketing, prospecting, training, identifying, meeting, making, hiring, calling, driving, helping, achieving, delivering, creating, executing, implementing, solving, winning, selling, including, developing, using, managing, leading, growing, closing, providing, building, consulting, coaching, negotiatingRemember, these are words from jobs across all functions, not just specific to a single area. One of the most interesting things about this list is that it looks quite similar to the list of verbs that professional resume writers recommend for use on a resume. In other words, it looks like job descriptions are indeed seeking âaccomplishmentsâ in the job seekers they target. Why is that interesting? âActionâ verbs donât just grab the attention of hiring managers on paper - they may actually help aid in pairing your resume to a job. Because companies like Ladders and others have products that match resumes to jobs automatically, the first step in getting noticed by hiring managers may be getting paired with the right job by an applicant tracking system (ATS). Many recruiters and hiring managers call candidates that are selected and shown to them by automated matching tools. These tools in turn are breaking your resume down into words and the relationships between them. This means that the rig ht keywords are twice as important - they can get your resume found as well as getting it noticed.

How to Choose Your Job References
How to Choose Your Job References How to Choose Your Job References How do you pick the directors, coworkers and direct reports to be your job references?A job reference must be more than just someone willing to shower you with praise. Recruiters and hiring managers are looking for someone who can speak to your performance and impact on the team; someone who was in a position to rely on your performance and offer a glimpse of how you will perform in the future. The most effective references are from someone with whom youâve worked: a former director, co-worker or somebody youâve supervised, said Mary Schumacher, a certified professional resume writer who works with Ladders. Others to consider include vendors, customers or those with whom youâve worked at a volunteer organization. Make sure only to include references who understand why you left the company and who will say good things about you, your leadership, and your performance, she said. Before including a reference on a referral list, ask the person in advance to be a verbal reference (as o pposed to writing a reference letter), Schumacher said. Bear in mind that âsome companies or organizations have policies against saying a lot about a former employee except for dates of employment, salary, etc.,â she said.Another hurdle is identifying references who no longer work at the company where they supervised you or worked at companies that no longer exist. In such a case, itâs âdifficult to track down a former boss or co-worker, especially as people move around,â Schumacher said. She suggests obtaining a written letter of recommendation from the company and a former boss when you leave and keeping it on hand for the future. âThe letters donât carry as much credibility as a telephone conversation, but itâs better than nothing if you canât find a person.âIf a prospective employer requests your references, make sure to give them a heads-up that someone might call and coach them on items to highlight from your past work, Schumacher said. Just as important: M ake sure to thank them for their efforts on your behalf.Director, friend and direct reportDan Dorotik, also a certified professional resume writer who works with Ladders resume-writing service, formats his clientsâ reference summaries into two columns. In the left column, he lists the email addresses, work phone numbers and titles in âReference Information.â In a right-hand column, he then gives one- to two-sentence descriptions of the relationship between the job seeker and the reference, including the information the reference can verify about the job seeker.Alternatively, Dorotik lists a testimonial from the reference in the right column, which he said can be an excerpt from a letter of recommendation, an e-mail or another source.âThis presentation of references is much more effective, as it provides further insight into the candidate-reference relationship,â he said. âMany job seekers do not use this type of reference summary, so those who do position themselves abov e the competition.â
